The administration of supplements such as vitamins, minerals, and other natural substances is proposed with the purpose of improving neurotransmitter function by increasing the availability of substrates and cofactors and/or compensating for supposed biochemical deficits that could cause autism. On other occasions, restrictive diets with limited intake of gluten, lactose, casein or other nutrients are recommended. Oral vitamin/mineral supplementation is beneficial in improving the nutritional and metabolic status of children with autism, however, no evidence suggests it provides improvements in autism symptoms. In the case of diets restricting nutrients such as gluten, lactose, casein, and other elements, the benefit is only found when the person with autism suffers from a food intolerance or allergy. It is not possible to recommend the gluten free or casein free and/or ketogenic diet, vitamins, minerals and probiotics to individuals with autism based on the available evidence. By planning a sufficient and balanced diet, it should be aimed to prevent nutrient deficiency and to ensure growth in accordance with the age in children with autism or the good health status of adults with autism.
